Life in Udzungwa

A campus between the mountains and the rice fields

Our campus sits at the foot of the Udzungwa Mountains, ten minutes from the national park gate and an hour from Ifakara. Students wake to mist over the escarpment and study within walking distance of the Kilombero valley.

Eleven halls of residence, a 24-hour library, a chapel that seats 700 and a student market where Saturday mornings smell of chapati and chai.

Research with roots

Work that begins in the valley and ends in the village

Our agriculture and environment faculty runs trial plots with 34 farmer groups along the Kilombero river, testing rice varieties, soil health and irrigation schedules that smallholders can actually afford.

Public health students partner with the Ifakara district clinics, while conservation students work alongside the park rangers monitoring the Udzungwa red colobus.

One common table

Teachers, nurses, pastors and farmers in one classroom

A twenty-year-old school leaver from Iringa sits next to a headteacher from Kilosa and a pastor from Mahenge. Classes run in English and Kiswahili, and the conversation carries on long after the lecture ends.

Every student joins a service group — literacy tutoring, clinic outreach, tree planting or the college choir — before they graduate.
